The South Downs are a line of chalk hills stretching from Eastbourne to Winchester. From the top of the hills you can see to the sea on one side and across the weald and to the North Downs on the other. The chalk, created from ancient deposits of the cretaceous period ninety million years ago, creates soft rolling hills covered in grassland.
